Jacobson, Watson among early Travelers commitments

Former champions Fredrik Jacobson, Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan, along with Vijay Singh and Anthony Kim, are the first players who have officially committed to play in the Travelers Championship June 21-24 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.Jacobson won his first PGA Tour event last year at the Travelers in his fourth try at the event, winning by one shot over Ryan Moore and John Rollins. He had his best year ever on tour, finishing 26th on the tour’s money list.Watson won his first tour event at the Travelers in 2010 in a sudden-death playoff over Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank. He won twice last year and is currently 19th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Mahan is 21st. The all-time leading money winner at the Travelers ($2.3 million), Mahan won his first tournament at River Highlands back in 2007 in a playoff over Jay Williamson.
A former three-time major champion, Singh is making his eighth appearance at the tournament. He has five top-15 finishes. Kim’s best finish in three appearances at the Travelers is a tie for 11th in 2009.

PGA Tour season begins Friday

The PGA Tour returns to action on Friday, not Thursday, with the Mercedes Championship, all of the winners from the 2011 season are invited.
The tournament will end on Monday night EST. Then the Hawaiian Open will begin on Thursday January 12 and end on Sunday, January 15.

Kelly Whaley headed to Quinnipiac

Kelly Whaley of Farmington, the winner of the Connecticut Women's Amateur in August, has signed a national letter of intent to play women's golf at Quinnipiac University.
Whaley shot an even-par 72 to win the 46th Women's Amateur by 1 shot over Ellie Dutch at Timberlin Golf Club. Kelly is the youngest daughter of Suzy Whaley, the teaching pro at TPC River Highlands, home to the Travelers Championship. The elder Whaley qualified for the 2003 Travelers, then known as the Greater Hartford Open.
Whaley will join the team next fall.
“Jenn brings an extensive history of competing in some of the best tournaments in the country,” Quinnipiac coach John O’Connor said in a statement. “Jenn’s length off the tee and her understanding of what it takes to play golf in the Northeast make her a great addition to our team. Jenn comes from a family of great golfers and she will definitely leave her mark in the history books here at Quinnipiac.”

CSGA inducts three into Hall of Fame

Art Williams and Gary Reynolds (Distinguished Service) and Ron Smith (Distinguished Golf Achievement) will be inducted into the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame at the Connecticut State Golf Association’s 112th annual meeting Tuesday at Race Brook Country Club in Orange.
Williams served as president of the CSGA in 1981-82 and has volunteered as a rules official for more than 40 years. Smith won the Connecticut Amateur Championship in 1964 and 1966 and the New England Amateur Championship in 1964. Reynolds, the former longtime head pro at Hartford GC, is the co-founder of the Connecticut Section PGA Golf Foundation, has also been heavily involved with The First Tee of Connecticut and served on the CT Section PGA Board of Directors since 1985.

Stegmaier wins MLGT Tournament

Brett Stegmaier of Hamden made five straight birdies on the inward nine and needed every one of them for a one-stroke victory Tuesday in a Fuzion-Minor League Golf Tour tournament at Ironhorse Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.
After a birdie-bogey-birdie start, Stegmaier made seven consecutive pars, then birdied five in a row starting at the par-3 11th hole. He shot a 67, earning $750 from the $3,500 purse. It was Stegmaier’s second MLGT title, the first coming April 13, 2007, on the nearby Estate course at PGA National.

Giancola wins match play event

Kevin Giancola of Golf Quest in Southington defeated Tom Gleeton, the head pro at Country Club of Waterbury, 4 and 3 to win the Connecticut Section PGA's Match Play event Thursday at Race Brook CC.
Giancola's semifinal-round win over Fran Marrello earned him enough points to secure his sixth Player of the Year title and third in four years.

PGA Tour 2012 scheule released

There have been some changes to the 2012 PGA Tour schedule, including the Mercedes Championship, the season-opening tournament, going to a Monday finish and some changes in the courses being used for the Fed Ex Cup playoffs.
But there were no new tournaments added. The Travelers Championship is June 18-24.

Whaley Named to Golf Digest 50 Best Teachers in America

Suzy Whaley made Golf Digest’s 50 Best Teachers in America for the first time in the magazine’s November issue. Whaley, who teaches at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, was one of six new instructors to make the list.

Whaley's coaching mentor is 1988 PGA Teacher of the Year Jim Flick and her husband, Bill Whaley, National Director of Golf Operations for the TPC network. She has been a guest on Golf Channel numerous times. She’s also filmed golf series tips for ESPN, Golfweek TV, Golf for Women, and a series of tips for local television in Connecticut. Her golf written contributions have appeared in Golf Digest, Golf, Golf for Women, and Golfer Girl magazine.
Her teaching accolades also include a top 5 national female teacher designation by Golf Digest magazine, and a top 50 US Kids teacher. She is also a two-time LPGA Northeast Teacher of the Year and is a two- time PGA Teacher of the Year honoree in the Connecticut PGA Section. She is currently the PGA Junior Golf Chairperson and is a PGA National Board member.

Whaley played on the LPGA Tour for two years before starting a family. In 2003, she was the second women to qualify and play in a PGA Tour event in the Greater Hartford Open.

Szewczul does it again

First, he defended his title at the New England Senior Amateur last week at Race Brook CC.
Then, he came from behind to win the Connecticut Senior Amateur last week at Simsbury Farms GC.
And then on Tuesday, Dave Szewczul shot an even-par 70 to come from behind to win the Connecticut Public Links tournament at Hunter GC. He won by three shots over Ryan Leahey (Orange Hills CC), who faltered to a second-round 76.
Rob Tedoldi Jr. (Tallwood CC) and Manny DaSilva (Blue Fox Run GC) tied for third at 6-over 146 in the two-day tournament, eight behind Szewczul.

Leahey leads Publinx

Ryan Leahey from Orange Hills CC posted a 5-under 65 to take a three-shot lead after the opening round of the Connecticut Public Links tournament held at Hunter GC.
Leahey, who qualified for both the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Mid-Amateur this summer, leads Dave Szewczul by 3. Szewczul (Tunxis Plantation CC), who successfully defended his title at the New England Senior Amateur title two weeks ago at Race Brook CC, shot 68.
Former Yale University golfer Tom McCarthy (Twin Hills CC) is tied for eighth place after posting a 74.

Moraghan named CSGA executive director

Michael Moraghan is the new executive director of the Connecticut State Golf Association (CSGA) effective Dec. 1. He will replace the retiring Ron Drapeau.
Moraghan twice represented the CSGA on its Tri-State Team in annual matches against Massachusetts and Rhode Island. His competitive golf resume includes participation in two United States Golf Association (USGA) Amateur Championships, a British Amateur, British Mid-Amateur, Bermuda Amateur, Canadian Amateur, and Canadian Mid-Amateur as well as professional competitions throughout the United States and Canada.
As a founder and President of Miridian Films, Inc. Moraghan produced video programming for clients that included the USGA, the National Steeplechase Association and the University of Virginia. For the last 22 years, Mike has been employed at the University of Virginia as both head men's golf coach and most recently as executive producer, athletics department.
His father, Marty Moraghan, was the CSGA President 1977-78 and is a member of the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame.

Szewczul defends title

Dave Szewczul from Tunxis Plantation Country Club in Farmington shot an even-par 71 to win the 14th New England Senior Amateur Championship for the second straight year, this time by 1 shot at Race Brook CC in Orange.
Szewczul shot a two-round total of 1-under 141.
Andrew Congdon of Massachusetts, who led by 2 after the opening round, shot a 74 Wednesday to finish second.
Mark Fries (Race Brook CC) was the next-highest finisher from Connecticut, tying for sixth place at 4-over 146. Bill Lee from The Course at Yale tied for 14th (149).

FIRST NIAGARA SPONSORS TOURNAMENT

The First Tee of Connecticut announced that First Niagara is the new presenting sponsor of The First Tee of Connecticut New Haven County Charity Classic with the goal of surpassing the more than $400,000 the tournament has raised since its inception in 2003. The tournament will be held Oct. 4 at the Country Club of Waterbury.
The First Tee of Connecticut is a youth development organization with a national reputation serving over 50,000 young people statewide annually in life skills development through various golf programs. New Haven is home to two of The First Tee's 13 in-state learning centers—Alling Memorial Golf Course and The Course at Yale—which serve youth golfers from throughout greater New Haven.

New England Seniors coming to Race Brook CC

The New England Golf Association (NEGA) will be holding its 14th N.E.G.A. Senior Amateur Championship at Race Brook Country Club (Orange) on Tuesday and Wednesday. Race Brook is one of the few clubs to host two major NEGA tournaments - the NEGA Amateur Championship in 2004 and the NEGA Senior Championship this year.

120 players from the six New England states will be playing.

Ace at Laurel View CC - on a par-4!

Yes it can happen, an ace on a par-4 hole. I've written about a few of them over the years.

It happened this past week on the 10th hole at Laurel View Country Club in Hamden. It is a downhill, 330-yard hole dogleg right where if you cut the ball perfectly over the trees, you can get it on the green. Of course, you are not thinking you will hole it.

But Ed Strong did, using a driver. He was playing with Ian Williams and Tony Celone.

Two summers ago, I wrote about Dennis Dammling also making an ace on the 10th hole, also using a driver.

I've given it a rip myself in a couple of scrambles. I have cleared the trees, but have never reachd the green. Normally, I'm in the woods - somewhere I believe a lot of golfers often end up on this risk-reward hole.

Giancola defends title

Kevin Giancola of Golf Quest in Southington made par on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to defend his Connecticut PGA Championship title in the 80th edition of the tournament at the Black Hall Club in Old Lyme on Wednesday.
Giancola won his fourth title overall after Tony Kelley (Wyckoff GC) and Fran Marrello (Canaan CC) both failed to reach the par-4 playoff hole in two shots, then both failed to get up and down for par. Giancola won $5,000.
All three golfers finished with a three-round total of 8-over-par 221 at the par-71 course.

CT Mid-Amateur postponed again

The second and third rounds of the Connecticut Mid-Amateur championship was postponed Wednesday due to inclement weather. The final 36 holes will now be played Oct. 13 at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford.
This is the second time the final 36 holes has been postponed. Tropical Storm Irene caused it to be moved from last week. Scott Farrell from the Black Hall Club shot an opening-round 69 last week and leads by two shots over Raymond Floyd, Jr. (Innis Arden CC) and Steve Bugg (Clinton CC).

Leahey qualifies for U.S. Mid-Amateur

Ryan Leahey of Orange has had quite a month.
First he qualified for the U.S. Amateur at New Haven Country Club back on Aug. 1.
Exactly one month later, Leahey shot a 2-under-par 70 at Tallwood CC in Hebron to qualify for the U.S. Mid-Amateur for the second straight year.
Paul Buttafuoco of Somers and Rudy Hermstadt of Waterbury shot 69 and 72, respectively, to also qualify.
The three players advance to the 31st U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship on Sept. 17-22 at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Texas.

State Mid-Amateur now begins Wednesday

The Connecticut State Golf Association’s 24th Mid-Amateur championship will now begin on Wednesday rather than Tuesday at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford due to the impact of Hurricane Irene.
The low 36 players and ties from Wednesday’s opening round will advance to the final 36 holes, now being held on Sept. 7. Thursday’s U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier at Tallwood CC in Hebron would conflict with the conclusion of the state Mid-Amateur because players are entered in both events.

The Barclays shortened to 54 holes

EDISON, N.J. – The PGA TOUR today announced that The Barclays, the first of four events in the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup, will be shortened from a 72-hole event to 54 holes, due to the impending threat of Hurricane Irene, which is forecast to move up the East Coast and into the Tri-State area on Sunday.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed a state of emergency on Thursday in advance of Hurricane Irene’s arrival, which threatens to cause severe flooding and damage this weekend, and forecasters issued a hurricane warning for much of New Jersey early Friday morning.
The Barclays is being held for the first time at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J.
“We weighed all the options available to us, and under normal circumstances, we would obviously prefer to complete 72 holes,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. “That’s even more true here at The Barclays, considering that this is such an important event to our players as they look to advance through the PGA Tour playoffs for the FedExCup. But these aren’t normal circumstances. We realize that ‘waiting it out’ until Hurricane Irene passes and trying to play golf on Monday or Tuesday would only add unnecessary strain to those who will be trying to help the community recover from whatever potential damage this storm causes. The safety of the community, our fans, players, sponsor guests, television partners and staff is of the utmost importance.”
Those who have purchased Sunday tickets to The Barclays 2011 will be contacted by tournament officials and given good-any-day tickets to The Barclays 2012 at The Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y., in exchange.
This marks the first time in the brief history of the FedExCup that an event has been shortened to 54 holes and the first 54-hole event since the 2009 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Ryan Leahey of Orange and Bernie D’Amato of Weston will both miss the cut to reach match play at the U.S. Amateur at Erin Hills and Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Erin Hills, Wisc.

Play was still going on out in Erin Hills at press time.
Leahey, who qualified out of New Haven CC, shot a 8-over-par total for 36 holes on the two courses while D’Amato, who got in as an alternate, stood at 10-over with nine holes left.

The low 64 players advanced to match play beginning today. That number at press time was even par.

D'Amario wins CT PGA Professional Championship

Adam D’Amario shot a two-round total of 2-under 140 to win the 15th Connecticut PGA Professional Championship Tuesday being held at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton.
D’Amario, who plays out of the Ranch GC, earned one of two spots in the 45th PGAProfessional National Championship, June 24-27, 2012, at Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside, Calif. The other is New Haven CC assistant pro William Street, who tied for second at even-par 142 with Ed Slattery (Candlewood Valley CC).
Street beat Slattery in a three-hole, sudden-death playoff for the other spot.

Wilson shoots even par at U.S. Amateur

Cameron Wilson of Rowayton shot an even-par 72 on the 7,760-yard Erin Hills Course in Wisconsin in the opening round of the U.S. Amateur Monday. Wilson is tied for 62nd place. The top 64 players advance to match play on Wednesday.
Ryan Leahey of Orange shot a 4-over-76 at Erin Hills and Bernie D'Amato of Weston posted a 5-over-75 at Blue Mound. Both will have to go low on Tuesday to make it into match play.

Whaley wins Connecticut Women's Amateur

Kelly Whaley shot an even-par 72 to win the 46th Connecticut Women's Amateur by 1 shot over Ellie Dutch at Timberlin Golf Club.
Kelly is the youngest daughter of Suzy Whaley, the teaching pro at TPC River Highlands, home to the Travelers Championship. The elder Whaley qualified for the 2003 Travelers, then known as the Greater Hartford Open.
Dutch, a first-round co-leader, three-putted the final hole for a bogey to miss out on a sudden-death playoff. She shot 76. Mia Landegren, the other first-round leader, skied to a 78.
Whaley is the second-youngest winner of the Amateur behind Liz Janangelo, who won it five times.

Mia Landegren and Ellie Dutch both shot even-par 72s to share the lead after the opening round of the Connecticut Women's Amateur tournament being held at Timberlin Golf Club.
Landegren isn't even 16, yet she is the No. 1 player on her high school team - the Shepaug Valley boys team - as a sophomore. She qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship this year and also is a member of the Swedish Junior National team.
Dutch played for the boys team at Hale-Ray High School. A 2010 graduate of UConn, Dutch won the Massachusetts Women's Open in late June.
Defending champion Erica Barnes shot a 75 on her home course and is 3 shots behind the leaders heading into Wednesday's final round.

Massachusetts wins NE Juniors

Massachusetts shot a 12-over-par total of 367 to win the New England Junior Championship by 13 shots over New Hampshire and Connecticut Tuesday at Brattleboro Country Club in Brattleboro, Vt.
The tournament was shortened from 54 holes to 18 because of rain. Connecticut coach Nick Pahoulis said the teams got 10 holes in Monday before play was called.
Peter French of Massachusetts was the only player under par, shooting a 4-under 67. Nick Hedden (New London CC) led Connecticut with a 73. It was just the third time in 10 years that Connecticut, the defending champion, did not win the title.

New Haven CC duo wins PGA Pro-Assistant Championship

Head PGA professional, William Wallis,and PGA assistant professional, William Street, of New Haven CC, put on quite the show at Madison Country Club for The TaylorMade-adidas PGA Pro-Assistant Championship shooting a combined four-under 66.
Their score took the championship the into a sudden death playoff against head PGA professional, Marc Bayram, and apprentice professional, Jacob Halligan, who had finished earlier with a four-under 66. After just onehole, Wallis and Street were able to tap in for birdie and the victory at Madison CC.

Harding's Bentley retires

In a spot normally reserved for golf, I think this is a special reason to delve into high school basketball.

Charlie Bentley, second all time with 655 victories, has retired after 34 years as Harding's boys' basketball coach. That includes nine state championships.

In a story reported by the Connecticut Post, Bentley, 60, made it official on Monday. Bentley lives in West Haven.

It was a tough final year for the Presidents, going 10-12. I'm fortunate I got to see and cover his final game, a 56-54 overtime loss to Hillhouse in the opening round of the Class LL state tournament. This was not even close to one of Bentley's vintage teams, but the team came back from a 14-point deficit to force overtime and by all rights should have won that game.

Still one of my favorite games was the 1988 Class LL championship between St. Joes and Harding at CCSU -a true classic won by St. Joes. Ask anyone who saw the game and they will tell you the exact same thing. Boobie Wright and Malcolm Leak for Harding and Tommy Montelli and Marvin Saddler for St. Joes.

One of the game's true legends has moved on.

Ryan Leahey of Orange shot a 7-under 135 total for 36 holes at New Haven Country Club to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Monday.
Leahey, 26, shot a 65 in the second round to gain a spot in the tournament Aug. 22-28 at Erin Hills and Blue Mound Golf and Country Club in Wauwatosa, Wisc.
It was an emotional win for Leahey,who missed his grandmother's funeral in order to play. "I talked with my aunt and my parents and we all agreed that my grandmother would have wanted me to play," Leahey said. "It was a little tough not being there (at the funeral)."
Spencer Cole of Greenville, S.C. shot 5-under 137 to grab the other spot. He was in the final group of the day and had to endure a two-hour lightning and torrential downpour delay to finish. He had been an alternate twice before.
Bernie D'Amato, the 2009 state amateur champion, played with Leahey and shot 4-under 138. He, too, waited out the storm and watched as Cole made him a first alternate.

Bensel wins 2nd Connecticut Open

Frank Bensel posted a 3-under-par 69 to win the 77th Connecticut Open championship by two shots over Tom McCarthy and Dan Balin.
It is the second time Bensel, 43, has won the Open, also doing so in 2009 at Hartford GC. He birdied the first and fourth holes, then made 10 straight pars. He never lost sole possession of the lead.
Bensel is a Danbury resident and an assistant pro at the Century Club in Purchase, N.Y.

McCarthy, the former Yale University standout, made seven birdies, including three straight at holes 11 thru 13, to get to 7-under for the tournament and one behind Bensel. He had to get up and down on the next three holes to salvage pars, almost made another birdie at 17, then had an unfortunate occurrence at 18.

His drive on the par-4 finishing hole plugged in the fairway bunker on the right side. He could only use sand wedge to get it back to the fairway. He failed to get up and down from there, settling for bogey. But it was a great run for McCarthy after finishing sixth last week at the New England Amateur.

Balin, an assistant pro at Burning Tree CC in Greenwich, also got it to 7-under, but bogeyed the 15th hole coming in. He qualified to play for the PGA Championship in two weeks in Atlanta Aug. 11-14. You will be hearing about this player in the future at Met events.

Dave Szewczul and Jack McConachie, who were both tied for second coming into the final round, finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The Connecticut Open stays in Fairfield County for 2012, going to Wee Burn CC in Darien.

Bensel leads Connecticut Open

As second-round play winds down after a 30-minute weather delay, Bensel will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the 77th Connecticut Open at Brooklawn Country Club.

Dave Szewczul and Jack McConachie both are in second place at 4-under 138. Dan Balin is fourth at 3-under 139.

First-round leader Dave Pastore skied to a 76 and is at even-par 142, tied with defending champion Kyle Gallo among others.

The cut will likely come at 5-over-147, leaving the low 40 golfers and ties to battle it out for the title Wednesday.

Dave Pastore, an amateur from eClub of Fairfield, shot a five-under par round of 66 to take a two-shot lead following the opening round of the 77th Connecticut Open Championship Monday at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield.
Pastore, a Greenwich native and 2009 Connecticut Public Links Champion, tees off today at 1:20 p.m. Evan Beirne of New Haven CC, who finished second last year, and Frank Bensel, the 2009 Connecticut Open champion, both shot 3-under 68s. Jack McConachie, the head pro at Pine Valley CC in Southington, and amateur Brian Murphy of Brooklawn CC both posted 69s.
Former Yale University golfer Tom McCarthy leads a group of three golfers tied for sixth place at 1-under 70. Jim Fitzpatrick from the Course at Yale leads a large group at even-par 71 that includes Shelton resident Jim St. Pierre.
Defending champion Kyle Gallo and 2003 winner Steve Sokol are both tied for 35th place after both opened with 3-over 74s.

Jeff Hedden from the Black Hall Club in Old Lyme followed up a 6-under-par 64 in the third round with an even-par 70 in the final round, good enough to win the 82nd New England Amateur championship Wednesday by six shots over Massachusetts' Richy Werenski at Metacomet Country Club in East Providence, R.I.
Hedden, who posted a four-round total of 13-under 267, trailed Peter Williamson of New Hampshire by two shots heading into Wednesday's 36-hole final. Williamson went 72-76 in his final two rounds to finish at 279, 12 shots behind Hedden. Brad Velois of Metacomet CC finished third at 4-uner 276.
Former Yale University golfer Tom McCarthy shot a 67 in the final round to finish in sixth place at 280. Ryan Leahey of Orange Hills CC tied for seventh place at 282. Reigning state amateur champion Tommy McDonagh withdrew after a third-round 77.

My British Open selections

Not going too far out on a limb on a golf course (Royal St. George's) that really does not favor anyone:

1. Rory McIlroy - Hard to pick against the best player in the world right now. Yes, I said the best.

2. Jason Day - Runner-up in the last two majors. Won't be the least bit surprised to see Day and McIlroy in the final group on Sunday.

3. Lee Westwood - Missed the cut the last time the Open was played at Royal St. George's, but does have four top-10 finishes in the event, including a second and third the last two years, respectively.

Natalie Sheary of West Hartford, a member of the LPGA Futures Tour, said she will be sponsored by Carrier Corporation, an air conditioning company that has headquarters in Farmington, beginning at the ING New England Golf Classic July 15-17.

The ING will be held at Wintonbury Hills GC in Bloomfield. Sheary has played in five tournaments since graduating from Wake Forest University. She is currently 38th on the tour's money list.

Monte Mullen and Kelly Whaley both of Farmington, won the 2011 Connecticut Junior PGA Championship Wendesday July 6 at Hunter GC in Meriden and Timberlin GC in Berlin.
By winning the boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively, Mullen and Whaley qualified for the 36th Junior PGA Championship, Aug. 2-5 at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Mullen, 18, posted a final-round 71 for atwo-day total of 139 and a seven-stroke victory. Whaley, 14, had a final-round of 75 for a two-daytotal of 145 and a 13-stroke victory.
Mullen will attend Central Connecticut State University in the fall.
Also with their victories, both Mullen and Whaley also earn an invitation to the Connecticut Section Junior Golf Tour season ending Jack KellyTournament of Champions in August.

Connecticut Junior PGA Championship

After the first round of the tournament being held at both Hunter Memorial Golf Club in Meriden and Timberlin GC in Berlin, Kelly Whaley of Farmington leads the girls' division, firing an even-par 70 with four birdies on the day.
The boys division is led by Monte Mullen of Farmington with a 2-under 68, carding four birdies. In the 12 and under, 9-hole divisions, Gabrielle Martin of Madison took first place for the girls with a 13-over 49. In the boys division, four players shot a 7-over 43, but Ryan Levy of Trumbull snagged the win in a match of cards.

Junior Golf Tour

The Junior Golf Tour had the second of back to back tournament at Tashua Knolls in Trumbull, in memory of Don Miklus with great volunteers and staff. The event brought the first hole in one of the season by Joseph Catalina of Wolcott. He teed off with an 8-iron on the par 3 third to ace the 151 yard hole.

A small field of 90 in the 13-18 division competed in the tournament where a low score of one under par of 71 by Jacob Henny of Norwalk, Conn. took first place in the boys division and Lauren Gregory of Trumbull, Conn. shot a 78 to win for the girls division.

For the boys 9-hole division Aaron Montgomery of Lakefield, again faced a tie, this time against Ben James with matching scores of 42. This time Aaron was able to win with matching cards and win the division. The girls 9-hole division was won by Gabrielle Martin with a score of 43.

McDonagh wins Amateur

Tommy McDonagh from Shorehaven Golf Club defeated Matt Smith of Quinnatisset CC 3 and 2 to win the 109th Connecticut Amateur Championship Saturday at Rolling Hills CC in Wilton.
McDonagh, who also won this event in 2006, trailed Smith 1-down after the first 18 holes. Then Smith went 2-up through 24 holes.
But McDonagh took the lead for good through 29 holes, then closed out Smith on the 34th hole.

Tommy McDonagh from Shorehaven Golf Club and Matt Smith from Quinnatissett Country Club walked away victorious in their semifinal matches to earn a berth in the 36-hole final of the 109th Connecticut Amateur Championship at Rolling Hills Country Club.
McDonagh, a senior at Penn State University and 2006 CT Amateur Champion, was forced to suspend his quarterfinal match due to heavy rain and severe lightning. When play resumed McDonagh would need to extra holes to defeat defending champion and Princeton University junior, Bernie D’Amato.
McDonagh made birdie on both extra holes to advance to the semi-finals against Greg Reilly from Country Club of Darien, who had completed his quarterfinal match on Thursday morning. McDonagh’s stellar play continued throughout the morning. McDonagh would go 1-down after Reilly made a birdie on the first hole but quickly stormed back.
He would go on to make five birdies (Holes 4, 7, 8, 10, & 11) in the next 10 holes to win 6 & 4. McDonagh will be looking for his second Connecticut Amateur Championship to go along with his two Metropolitan Amateur Championships.
Matt Smith completed his quarterfinal match Thursday morning prior to the rain delay. When Curtis Loop from Country Club of New Canaan made a birdie on the first extra hole to defeat Sam Bernstein from The Course at Yale, the semifinal match was set.
Smith took an early 2-up advantage after two holes. Loop, a junior at Georgetown University, would get the match back to all square with birdies on holes four and five. After Smith made a double bogey on the par four eighth hole, Loop had a one-up advantage.
Smith, a senior at the University of Hartford, continued to play consistent throughout the rest of the round and would get the match back to all square with a par on the 11th hole. Smith would take the final lead of the match on the par-three 15th hole when Loop’s par putt just slid by the hole. The two would tie the final three holes with Smith winning 1-up.
The last time a Connecticut Amateur final was played on a Saturday was in 2003 at Wampanoag Country Club, won by Justin Goodhue over Steve Velardi. The match is schedule to begin Saturday at 7 a.m. Spectators are welcome.

Bernstein still alive in Amateur

Rising Yale University sophomore Sam Bernstein fought back from a 4-down deficit in the Connecticut State Amateur to 1-down on the 18th hole against Curtis Loop at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wilton.

That quarterfinal-round match was suspended Thursday to due severe inclement weather. I will resume at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Defending champion Bernie D'Amato is in sudden death with former champion Tommy McDonagh. That match will also resume at 7:30. Greg Reilly and Matt Smith have already reached the semifinals, which will follow after the conclusion of the remaining two matches.

The 36-hole final has now been pushed to Saturday.

Former Yale University standout golfer Tom McCarthy won his first two matches to reach the semifinals of the 109th Connecticut State Amateur Wednesday at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wilton.
McCarthy, who graduated last month, defeated Masayuki Kobayashi in the opening round, then took down the medalist, John Murphy, in the second round. McCarthy will play Greg Reilly in the first quarterfinal at 8 a.m.
Sam Bernstein, a rising sophomore at Yale, also advanced to the quarterfinals, including a win over veteran Dave Szewczul in the second round. He will face Curtis Loop.
In other quarterfinals, defending champion Bernie D'Amato will face former Amateur champion Tommy McDonagh and Devon O'Rourke will face Matt Smith. The semifinals will follow.

There are always great storylines at the Monday qualifiers for the PGA Tour events. How often do you get a former two-time U.S. Open winner in the field?
Lee Janzen, the winner in 1993 and 1998, will attempt to qualify for the Travelers Championship at Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield on Monday. So will pros Evan Beirne and Brett Stegmaier, who hail from New Haven CC, along with former tour winners Robert Gamez, Bob Estes and Patrick Sheehan.

Furyk, Ogilvy, O'Hair coming to Travelers

Jim Furyk, Geoff Ogilvy and Sean O’Hair are the latest golfers to commit the Travelers Championship next week at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.
Furyk is making his fourth appearance, but first since 2001. The 2003 U.S. Open champion, Furyk is the reigning FedEx Cup champion and is ranked 19th in the world golf rankings. His best finish was in 2000 when he finished fourth.
Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open winner, made his only other trip back to River Highlands in 2001, when he finished tied for 22nd. Through nine events in 2011, Ogilvy has finished in the top-25 five times, including a tie for fourth at The Masters, and is ranked 32nd.
O’Hair will make his second trip to TPC River Highlands and first since 2006. He has three top-25 finishes.
The three join already committed players Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan, Anthony Kim, Nick Watney, Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh, Tim Clark, Ricky Barnes, Rickie Fowler, David Toms, John Daly and more.

Charity match, junior clinic at New Haven CC

A PGA Tour player competing in the Travelers Championship next week will be conducting a 30-minute junior clinic at New Haven Country Club Wednesday at 2 p.m. It is free to the public.
It will not be known until that day which tour pro will be hosting the clinic. He is also scheduled to sign autographs for 15 minutes after the clinic.
Today, the course is hosting the First Annual NHCC Charity Match. This event will benefit the Travelers Championship "Chip in for Charity" and the PGA Golf Foundation.
The match will feature junior club members turned professionals Evan Beirne and Brett Stegmaier versus current assistant professionals Brent Paladino and Billy Street. All four players have tremendous playing resumes.
Anyone interested in attending the junior clinic or making a donation to the Chip in for Charity, contact the New Haven CC pro shop at 203-248-4531.

Marrello wins Senior PGA in playoff

Fran Marrello of Canaan CC had to go extra holes this time around, but won the 60th Senior Connecticut PGA Championship for the second straight year with a birdie on the sixth hole of a sudden-death playoff at Fox Hopyard GC.
Marrello, who shot an even-par 71 and two-day total of 146, outlasted Ralph Salito (The Club at River Oaks), Bob Kay (Tumble Brook CC), John Paesani (Norwich GC) and Tony Kelley (Wyckoff CC). Marrello also won the event in 2007.

Watney, Duval coming to Travelers tournament

The Travelers Championship announced seven more commitments to the 2011 field Tuesday, highlighted by Nick Watney, David Duval and Aaron Baddeley.
Currently ranked 14th in the Official World Golf Rankings, Nick Watney has seven top-10 finishes this year, including a victory at the WGC Cadillac Championship. Watney will be making his fifth visit to TPC River Highlands in Cromwell for the Travelers Championship June 23-26. His best finish is a tie for ninth in 2005 and 2006.
Duval will make his seventh trip to TPC River Highlands and first since 2003. Duval has 13 career victories, including the 2001 British Open.
Baddeley has four top-10 finishes this year, including a win at the Northern Trust Open back in February.
Tim Clark, J.B. Holmes, Bo Van Pelt and Ryan Moore also committed on Tuesday.
Clark will make his first trip to Cromwell since 2005. He won the 2010 Players Championship and is currently ranked 31st in the world.
Holmes has four top-10 finishes in 11 events this year.
Van Pelt will be making his ninth visit to the Travelers.
Moore has earned two top-five finishes in 2011 and will be making his seventh trip to TPC River Highlands.

Henry gets into U.S. Open

Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Michael Bolton, Academy Award-winning actor Joe Pesci, actor Luke Wilson, six-time National Sportscaster of the Year Chris Berman, reality TV and wrestling star Mike “The Miz” Mizanin and Hall of Fame College Basketball coach Jim Calhoun were among the celebrities announced for the Travelers Celebrity Pro-Am on June 22 at TPC River Highlands.
Additional fan favorites include Baseball Tonight host Karl Ravech, University of Connecticut Associate Head Basketball Coaches Chris Dailey and George Blaney and alum Kevin Ollie who played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association.
The tournament will once again welcome WFAN Sports Talk Radio host Mike Francesa for a live broadcast of his show, Mike’d Up: Francesa on the FAN from 1–6 p.m. on the clubhouse patio. Following the radio broadcast, Eddie Money during the first night of the REACH Concert Series.

Lintz wins CT Women's Open

Jordan Lintz, the teaching pro at Great River Golf Club in Milford, beat Liz Caron on the seocnd hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the 13th Connecticut Women's Open at The Golf Club at Oxford Greens.
Lintz used to play on both the LPGA Tour and Futures Tour before turning to teaching. Caron used to be Liz Janangelo, a four-time winner of the Open (2003-06) who played on the LPGA and Futures Tour as well before also turning to teaching this year at Rockrimmon CC in Stamford.

Slattery wins Walter Lowell Tournament

Ed Slattery of Candlewood Valley CC finished with 32 points in the stableford system format to win the Walter Lowell PGA Tournament at Clinton CC.
Frank Leja, of the Evergreen Golf Center finished second with 27 points, followed by John Paesani of Norwich GC (26 points) and William Street of New Haven CC and Joe Mongillo of Hop Meadow CC tied for fourth (25 points).
