Yale's McCarthy shoots 66
Tom McCarthy, a member of the Yale University golf team, shot a 4-under-par 66 on his home course Tuesday, tying his best score on the Course at Yale and, more importantly, tying him for second place after the opening round of the New England Amateur championship.
McCarthy was the only member of the afternoon wave of golfers to finish among the top five. Jonathan Pannone of Rhode Island leads after day one with a 5-under 65.
McCarthy, who will be a senior at Yale, was tied for the second-round lead in last year's New England Amateur, but faltered over the final 36 holes, tying for 11th place.
The lowest round from a member at the Course at Yale Tuesday was Ryan Leahey with a 1-over 71.
