Ahern wins second Mid-Amateur title

Brian Ahern birdied the second playoff hole to win the 25th Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship over Dave Szewczul at Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury.
This is the second Mid-Amateur title for Ahern, who plays out of Wampanoag CC in West Hartford. He won the event in 2010 and tied for second last year. He and Szewczul (Tunxis Plantation CC) combined for three-round totals of 3-over-par 219, leading to the sudden-death playoff.
Anthony Scott (Tashua Knolls GC), Phil Perry (Black Hall Club) and Zach Stennett (Tallwood CC) all tied for third place at 5-over 221. Jeff Schroeder of Madison CC was the top area golfer, tying for 10th place at 9-over 225.
