Brian Carlson of Madison beat Lucas Herbert in Australia in the opening round of match play at the 65th U.S. Junior Amateur being held at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, Calif.
Carlson, a member at Clinton CC, won his match 4 and 3. He was the Register's Area MVP for golf this past spring. Carlson will face Brad Dalke (Hobart, Okla.) in the second round this morning.
Carlson tied for sixth place at the New England Amateur last week.
