VanDerLaan wins New England Amateur
John VanDerLaan of Southbury and the Country Club of Waterbury shot 5-under over his final 36 holes to win the 85th New England Amateur Championship Wednesday at Winchester CC in Winchester, Massachusetts.
VanDerLaan, who recently graduated from Pomperaug High, was tied for 10th place after the opening two rounds. He finished with a 72-hole total of 6-under 278, beating Nick Pandelena of New Hampshire by three shots. Zach Zaback from TPC River Highlands finished third at 2-under 282.
Former Yale University golfer Sam Bernstein finished fourth at 283, while Brian Carlson, who recently graduated from Hand High and is headed to Purdue University, shot a final-round 69 to finish in a four-way tie for fifth place at 284.
