Baseball thoughts

We've entered the month of May, the weather gets warmer (allegedly) and the baseball really gets down to the nitty-gritty, so-to speak. SCC Divisional play reconvenes today and this is what we know.
Guilford holds a two-game lead in the SCC Hammonasset. If Hand does not beat Guilford today, you can basically lock up that division with Guilford two up with three to play.
Amity hosts Sheehan on Friday. After I touted Shelton as one of the two titans in the league, they have been in free-fall mode. The Gaels are still two games behind Amity but is anyone going to bet against Amity, winners of 23 straight games? Sheehan coach Matt Altieri knows it's a must-win on Friday or sayonara to the division race.
It looks like it will come down to Branford and North Haven on May 10th to determine the top team in the SCC Oronoque. Although Career is likely out of contention with three division losses, the Panthers have been playing well of late, scoring 26 runs combined against Fairfield Prep and Law.
West Haven plays at Xavier Friday in a rematch of the 5-4 thrilling eight-inning affair from a few weeks ago. This one is still too close to call with Notre Dame (WH) one game behind the two teams.
In other action...
Waterford, the No. 2 team in the Register Top 10 poll, overcame a 4-0 deficit late to stun Bunnell 7-4 at home. Bunnell came into the game ranked fourth, but has lost two straight. I think it's fair to say the voters have the correct two teams at the top of the polls...but the debate will continue between Amity and Waterford until one of them loses- if either of them lose.

If any of you are interested in seeing the top high school pitching prospect in the state, Matt Harvey will likely pitch for Fitch up at Norwich Free Academy next Monday at 3:45 p.m., then again on May 14 against Woodstock Academy at home at 4, then again May 21 at Plainville. His father and coach, Ed, likes to give Matt a week's rest between starts, knowing how valuable his right arm is to scouts.
Having seen him in person, yes, Matt harvey is the real deal. He averaged between 88-94 MPH in his victory over Ledyard and also threw a nasty curveball. Of his 11 strikeouts, eight batters were caught looking. He already has a full scholarship to North Carolina, but he is listed by Baseball America as one of the top two pitching prospects in the entire country. The 25 or so scouts wouldn't have come out to see him if they didn't think he was worthy of being a high draft pick.
I guess we all will know for certain when the draft is held in June.
