Sam Bernstein, who just completed his sophomore year at Yale University, shot even par over his final two rounds to win the ninth annual CSGA Russell C. Palmer Cup Tuesday by 4 shots over Blake Morris and Tommy McDonagh at Country Club of Waterbury.
Bernstein, an All-Ivy League selection for the Bulldogs this spring, shot 71-69 to finish with a three-round total of 3-under-par 204 on the par-69 course. He opened the tournament Monday with a 64. Morris, who plays out of CC of Waterbury, trailed Bernstein by 9 shots going into Tuesday's action, then shot 3-under over his final two rounds to finish at 208 with McDonagh, a two-time Connecticut Amateur champion.
Curtis Loop (CC of New Canaan) and Matt Smith (Quinnatisset CC) tied for fourth at 3-over 210. Matt Dziubina (Race Brook CC) tied for 13th at 220 and Ben Day (New Haven CC) tied for 20th at 224.
