Bernstein, Hawkes lead at Northern Junior
A Bernstein leads a tournament played at New Haven Country Club Tuesday, but it's not the Bernstein you are familiar with.
Will Bernstein shot a 3-under-par 67 to lead the 13th Northern Junior Championship by one shot over Brock Kovach (Wyomissing, PA). Bernstein, who is from New York, is the younger brother of Sam Bernstein, who starred at Yale University and had a top-10 finish in last week's Connecticut Open at Rolling Hills CC in Wilton.
Two NH Register All-Area performers from this past spring, Andrew Sciarretta of Fairfield Prep and Eric Austin from Notre Dame-West Haven, are tied for third with 1-under 69s, along with Nathaniel Dong of Glastonbury. Chris Simione of Cheshire is in a tie for sixth-place after shooting even-par 70.
Bernstein, Kovach and Austin go off at 12:48 p.m. Wednesday.
In the girls tournament, MacKenzie Hawkes of Madison shot a 1-over 71 to take a three-shot lead into Wednesday's final round. Hawkes won the Connecticut Women's Golf Association championship in June.
Rhoebe Brinker of Wilmington, Delaware is in second after shooting 74. She will play with Hawkes at 12:12 p.m. Wednesday. Gabrielle Martin, also of Madison, is tied for sixth with a 77.
