another coach steps down

It's been a wild week on the boys' basketball scene with the hiring of two coaches in the Southern Connecticut Conference: Anthony Hill at Wilbur Cross and Brian Gardiner at Shelton.

Now comes a retirement, at least in the words of this former coach: John Pfohl has stepped down at Kolbe Cathedral after 15 seasons. The 43-year-old posted a record of 317-67, eight South-West Conference championships and two state championships.

So why leave at such a young age. Pfohl said he wants to watch his oldest daughter, a frreshman at Trumbull High, play basketball. He has coached her and his other children in AAU for years, but said missing her games would be too much to bear. And who can blame him? Pfohl said he never will coach varsity basketball again.

The shoes to fill at Kolbe Cathedral will be very difficult to fill, no matter who takes over in the next month.
