Zaback still alive in Connecticut Amateur

The defending champion is still alive in the 113th Connecticut Amateur golf championship at the Black Hall Club in Old Lyme.

Zach Zaback from TPC River Highlands in Cromwell won his first two matches Wednesday to advance to Thursday morning’s quarterfinals. Zaback defeated Clark Robinson (Ellington Ridge CC) 1-up in the opening round and Mike Klosowski (Topstone GC) 5 and 3. Zaback will face Nick Torrance (Lake of Isles GC) in the quarterfinals.

Evan Grenus, also of TPC River Highlands, will face former Xavier High and current Penn State golfer Geoff Vartelas in the quarterfinals. And yet another TPC golfer, Patrick Hallisey, advanced to the quarterfinals, where he will face Greg Reilly from CC of Darien.

The other quarterfinal matchup pits C.J. Swift from the Great River GC in Milford against Chris Wiatr from CC of Waterbury.

The semifinals will be held this afternoon and the 36-hole final on Friday.
