down the stretch we come

as we head into the final three weeks of the season for every fall sport other than football, I wonder if some of the following questions will be answered among the area schools:

1) Hamden is the story of the football season. From consecutive 1-win seasons to an undefeated campaign so far this year and the top spot in the Class LL playoff points, Scott Benoit has done one amazing job.
Now, can Hamden run the table? Playing Xavier on the road on Friday will not be easy, as Shelton found out a couple weeks ago.
I do remember the last time there was this much excitement in Hamden. It was 1996 and Tony Martone's bunch led by QB Tony Hawthorne, receiver Barry James and tailback Horace Dodd came into the Green Bowl undefeated, only to lose to Notre Dame. Then the Green Dragons lost to Cheshire in the Class LL state championship game.
Hamden is hoping for a different outcome this time around.

2) Can the Guilford boys' soccer team, ranked second in the state, keep this shutout string alive? Only Cheshire has scored upon the Indians this season. They have what it takes to win the SCC. Can they win Class LL?

3) Will the soccer teams in the SCC fare better than last year? Only the Amity girls reached the state tournament semifinals in what was a disappointing November for the conference. The SCC needs a much better showing to even be considered a state soccer power.

4) Which team will finish second to Cheshire in the SCC swim championships next Wednesday?

5) How many SCC cross country teams will qualify for the New England championships? How many individuals? The SCC contingent, led by the Amity an Xavier boys and the Guilford girls, appear ready to do well at the State Open on Oct. 31.

6) Will someone other than Cheshire or Amity win the SCC girls' volleyball championship? The two titans have won six of the last seven titles (Law being the exception in 2006). Can either Branford or Hand be the new queens of the SCC?

Stay tuned, everyone....
