Beirne wins Met Amateur

Evan Beirne of New Haven Country Club also retains a membership at Bethpage Gc in Farmingdale, N.Y., site of the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open championships. He does that so he can participate in Met golf events, like the 108th Met Amateur.

Beirne, 22, defeated Cameron Wilson of Shorehaven GC in Norwalk 7 & 6 in the 36-hole final Sunday to win the title at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y. It is the first Met Amateur title for Beirne.

Beirne was the No. 6 seed out of 16 players. None of his four matches went past the 16th hole.

Next up for Beirne is the U.S. Amateur qualifier on Aug. 9 at his home course, New Haven CC.
