Hedden wins NE Amateur by 6

Jeff Hedden from the Black Hall Club in Old Lyme followed up a 6-under-par 64 in the third round with an even-par 70 in the final round, good enough to win the 82nd New England Amateur championship Wednesday by six shots over Massachusetts' Richy Werenski at Metacomet Country Club in East Providence, R.I.
Hedden, who posted a four-round total of 13-under 267, trailed Peter Williamson of New Hampshire by two shots heading into Wednesday's 36-hole final. Williamson went 72-76 in his final two rounds to finish at 279, 12 shots behind Hedden. Brad Velois of Metacomet CC finished third at 4-uner 276.
Former Yale University golfer Tom McCarthy shot a 67 in the final round to finish in sixth place at 280. Ryan Leahey of Orange Hills CC tied for seventh place at 282. Reigning state amateur champion Tommy McDonagh withdrew after a third-round 77.

Vartelas misses cut at US Junior Amateur

Geoff Vartelas, a Cromwell resident and senior-to-be at Xavier High School, came up 1 shot short of qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur tournament Tuesday played at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
Vartelas shot 76-77-153 to come up 1 stroke short..

Hedden still 2 back at N.E. Amateur

Jeff Hedden of the Black Hall Club in Old Lyme shot a 3-under-par 67 to stay 2 shots behind Peter Williamson of New Hampshire after two rounds of the 82nd New England Amateur Tuesday at Metacomet Country Club in East Providence, R.I.
Williamson is at 9-under-par 131 midway through the tournament. Rich Werenski of Massachusetts is tied with Hedden at 7-under. Reigning state amateur champion Tommy McDonagh (Shorehaven GC) is in fourth place at 137, 6 strokes behind Williamson.
Former Yale University golfer Tom McCarthy shot a 67 to stand at 141 with 36 holes left to play today. Ryan Leahey of Orange Hills CC is at 142.

Chamberlain leads NE Women’s Amateur

Mary Chamberlain of South Dennis, Mass., shot a second-round 75 to maintain a 2-shot lead heading into today’s final round of the 55th New England Women’s Golf Association Championship at Shuttle Meadow CC in Kensington.
Chamberlain has a two-round total of 145. Katie Partridge of Bloomfield also shot a 75 and is 2 shots behind Chamberlain. Ali Prazak (Tiverton, R.I.) and Pam Kuong (Wellesley, Mass.) are tied for fourth at 149.
Mim Schreck is the next-highest player from the state (Fairfield), tied for 12th at 157. Lisa Fern-Boros is the top area golfer, tied for 21st at 162.

Williamson leads at NE Amateur

Peter Williamson of New Hampshire is the current leader by 2 shots late in the opening round of the 82nd New England Amateur being played at Metacomet Country Club in East Providence, R.I. Williamson shot a 6-under-par 64.
Jeff Hedden of the Black Hall Club is tied for second place at 4-under 66. Kevin Josephson of Stanley GC and Cody Paladino of Timberlin GC are in a large group tied for fifth place at 2-under 68.
Ryan Leahey of Orange Hills CC is tied for 11th at 1-under 69. Reigning state amateur champion Tom McDonagh is at even-par 70.
The field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after Tuesday's second round. The final 36 holes will be played Wednesday.
