Carlson qualifies for US Junior Amateur

Brian Carlson of Madison was a co-medalist at the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier held Monday and Tuesday at Fairview Country Club in Greenwich.

Carlson, who will be a senior at Hand High School, shot a two-round total of 2-over-par 146 (74-72). Theo Humphrey of Greenwich also shot 146. The other two qualifiers were Matt Lowe (Farmingdale, N.Y., 147) and Cameron Young (Scarborough, N.Y., 148).

All four golfers move on to the U.S. Junior Amateur July 22-27 at Martis Camp in Truckee, Calif.

“It’s going to be fun to play against the best juniors in the country,” Carlson said.

Carlson got in 27 holes on Monday before darkness postponed his final nine holes until Tuesday. He was 1-over through 27 holes. He said he hit just one of seven fairways Tuesday but managed to shoot just 1-over.

Henny, Grillo win Junior PGA event

Jacob Henny of Norwalk beat John VanDerLaan of Southbury in a sudden-death playoff to win the boys’ division of the Junior Connecticut PGA Championship at CC of Waterbury.

Both Henny and VanDerLaan shot even-par 69s in regulation.

In the girls’ division, Marissa Grillo of Avon shot a 7-over 78 to win by one shot over Andra Frappier of Cheshire and Mikayla Sheary of Simsbury.

Both Henny and Grillo advance to the Junior Connecticut PGA Championship July 30-Aug. 2 at Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls, Va.
