Swift wins New England Amateur


Chris Swift of Great River Golf Club in Milford posted rounds of 73 and 72 Thursday to win the 83rd New Englnd Amateur Championship by 5 shots at Falmouth Country Club in Falmouth, Maine.
Swift shot 68 and 69, respectively, in the opneing two rounds and finished the 72-hole event with a 2-under-par 282. Garren Poirier of Vermont, Jake Nutter of New Hampshire and Herbie Aikens of Massachusetts all tied for second at 3-over-287.
Branden Chicorka (E-Club of River Valley) was the next highest finisher from Connecticut, finihing ninth at 7-over 291. Nick Torrance (Lake of Isles GC) was 13th (294).
This is the second straight year someone from Connecticut won the Amateur. Jeff Hedden out of the Black Hall Club in Old Lyme was victorious in 2011.
