New Haven Golf Club looking to get younger members

The New Haven Golf Club has been around close to 65 years and is still about 160 members strong at Alling Memorial Golf Course.

It may not be as well known as the course’s Knickerbocker Club, but they did have over 300 members in the 1990s. And many of them have been members for decades, participating in a variety of tournaments.

Take John Limone, for instance. He has been a member of the club for over 20 years and has served as the organization’s president for the last eight.

“There is a lot of history in our cub,” said Limone, 69.

Milford's Ben James already a UConn commit - and he is only 11

MILFORD >> Ben James is not exactly an imposing figure at 5 feet 2 and 100 pounds. But even at the age of 11, he can be an intimidating presence on the golf course.

He already plays to a 6 handicap at Milford’s Great River Golf Club, which plays to a USGA Course rating of 72.8 from the blue tees. He has won several junior tournaments, including the 2013 U.S. Kids Golf World Championship in the 10-year-old group. He has rounds under his belt at U.S. Open courses Merion and Torrey Pines.

James will be wrapping up his 6th-grade year at East Shore Middle School in Milford next month, but he has already made a verbal commitment to attend UConn and play for coach Dave Pezzino.

“It feels great because I have somewhere to go I really love,” James said. “I really love this state. We (Ben and his father, Don) have a great relationship with Coach and it’s a great fit for us.”
