Travelers to remain with golf tournament

Sources have indicated that Travelers will extend its association with the Travelers Championship golf tournament through at least 2012.
The Travelers Championship have scheduled a press conference for this morning at the Hartford Marriott Downtown regarding "an important announcement" regarding the future of the tournament. Travelers is in its third year of a four-year agreement as the title sponsor for the former Greater Hartford Open. That agreement included a two-year option following the 2010 tournament.
The tournament is held annually at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.
Many tournaments on the PGA Tour's Fed Ex Cup slate were renegotiating this year whether or not to stay on as title sponsor with its particular event past 2010.
Sources indicated it is possible Travelers extended its own association past the two-year option.Expected to be in attendance, or join it via teleconference, includes PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem and Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell.
Sources indicated that Rell will be the honorary chairperson of this year's Travelers, the 58th year of the event.Travelers saved the tournament from extinction from the PGA Tour. In January of 2006, the PGA Tour relegated the tournament to the Fall Series after Buick ended its three-year agreement with the event after the 2004 tournament.
The Greater Hartford Jaycees and the tournament committee chose to reject the Fall Series and seek an event on the Champions Tour. A spot opened up on the 2007 Fed Ex Cup schedule a week before them tournament was to become a Champions Tour event.
