McCarthy wins CT Publinx crown


Former Yale University golfer Tom McCarthy shot a 1-over-par 73 Tuesday, but it was still good enough to win the 27th Connecticut Public Links Championship by four shots over Rudy Hermstadt at Smith Richardson Golf Club.

McCarthy, who graduated from Yale in 2011 and is a member at Twin Hills CC, shot a two-round total of 2-under 142 to take the title. Hermstadt (Crestbrook Park GC) posted a 146, followed by Chris Cote (Portland GC) and Kevin Josephson (Stanley GC) at 4-over 148. Richard Shildneck and Gene Cufone, both of Alling Memorial GC, tied for 12th (153) and 14th (155), respectively.

McCarthy leads at CSGA Publinx

Former Yale University golfer Tom McCarthy fired a 3-under par 69 to hold a 1-shot lead over Brian Bardier (Connecticut National Golf Club) after the opening round of the 27th CSGA Public Links championship at Smith Richardson Golf Course in Fairfield.


McCarthy, who graduated in 2011 and plays out of Twin Hills CC in Coventry, will tee off in the final group at 10:10 a.m. along with Bardier and Chris Cote (Portland GC), who shot a 1-over 73. Kevin Josephson (Stanley GC), is also tied for third after posting 73.
