Marrello wins CT Senior PGA

Fran Marrello of Plymouth shot a 2-under-par 68 to win the 61st Senior Connecticut PGA Championship at The Club at River Oaks in Sherman.


Marrello won by three strokes over Bob Kay (Tumble Brook CC) and host pro Ralph Salito (River Oaks), both of whom shot 71. Marrello, Salito and Ted Perez (East Mountain CC), who finished fourth with a 75, qualified for the Senior PGA Professional National Championship to be held Oct. 11-14, at Creighton Farms of Aldie, Va., and River Creek Club of Leesburg, Va.

Ahern wins second Mid-Amateur title


Brian Ahern birdied the second playoff hole to win the 25th Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship over Dave Szewczul at Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury.
This is the second Mid-Amateur title for Ahern, who plays out of Wampanoag CC in West Hartford. He won the event in 2010 and tied for second last year. He and Szewczul (Tunxis Plantation CC) combined for three-round totals of 3-over-par 219, leading to the sudden-death playoff.
Anthony Scott (Tashua Knolls GC), Phil Perry (Black Hall Club) and Zach Stennett (Tallwood CC) all tied for third place at 5-over 221. Jeff Schroeder of Madison CC was the top area golfer, tying for 10th place at 9-over 225.
