Foster wins CT Mid-Amateur


Kevin Foster of Hop Meadow CC in Simsbury fired a final round of 2-under 70 to win the Connecticut Mid-Amateur championship by two shots on his home course.

Foster finished the three-round event at 2-under 214. Phil Perry (Black Hall Club) finished second at even-par 216 while Chet Hrostek of Oxford Greens GC placed third (218).


Tom McCarthy (Twin Hills CC), the former Yale University standout, shot a final-round 70 to finish tied for fourth at 220.

Whaley wins second straight CT Women's Amateur title


Kelly Whaley (pictured above) posted a final-round total of 2-over-par 75 to win her second straight Connecticut Women's Amateur title Wednesday.

Whaley finished with a three-round total of 3-over 218 at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford, good enough to win by 14 strokes over Catherine McEvoy. Whaley, 17, won by 16 shots last year.

Whaley, a Farmington resident, also won the event in 2011. She will be a senior at the International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina this fall.

Olender leans at CT Mid-Amateur

Dave Olender of Ellington Ridge CC shot a 4-under 68 to lead the 27th Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship by two shots at Hop Meadow CC in Simsbury.

Chris Maxwell and Kevin Foster are tied for second after both shot 2-under 70. Phil Perry, Matt Holub, Chris Flowers and Randy Rizy are all tied for fourth with 71.

The final 36 holes are scheduled for Wednesday.

Whaley leads CT Women's Amateur by 13

Kelly Whaley shot a 2-under-par round of 70 to take a commanding 13-shot lead after two rounds of the 49th Connecticut Women’s Amateur golf tournament at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford.

Whaley, the defending champion, has a two-round total of 1-under 143. She won by 16 strokes last year.
She currently leads Danielle Lamy by 13 strokes and Catherine McEvoy by 14. All three golfers will be in the final group going off Wednesday at 10:10 a.m.

Brooke Stepanek of Guilford is tied for fifth place at 16-over 160, Mackenzie Hawkes of Madison is eighth (162) and former champion Jenn Holland of Branford is tied for ninth (163).
