Oosthuizen, Kelly among latest Travelers commitments

Former British Open Louis Oosthuizen and ex-University of Hartford standout Jerry Kelly were among five golfers committing to the Travelers Championship to be held later this month.


Also committing were Robert Karlsson, Kyle Stanley and Chris DiMarco for the tournament to be held June 21-24 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.

Oosthuizen, who lost in a sudden-death playoff to Bubba Watson at the Masters in April, is making is first appearance at the Travelers. He is currently ranked 15th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Kelly, who has three PGA Tour victories, is making his 15th appearance in the tournament.

Karlsson is also making his first appearance at the Travelers. He tied for fourth in last year's PGA Championship. Stanley turned pro at the 2009 Travelers and won his first tour event at the Waste ManagementPhoenix Open in Februrary. DiMarco will be making his 13th appearance to the Travelers.

On Monday, the Travelers announced its headliners for the Celebrity Pro-Am to be held June 20, among them comedian Bill Murray, University of Connecticut basketball coaches Jim Calhoun and Geno Auriemma, Quinnipiac men's basketball coach Tom Moore and former Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie.

Senior Match Play event

Dave Szewczul of Tunxis Plantation CC and Dave Zeid of New Haven CC advanced to the semifinals of the CSGA Senior Match Play Championship at Silver Spring CC in Ridgefield.


Szewczul will face Ray Underwood of Torrington CC in one semi while Zeid will face Larry Bolduc (Long Hill CC) in the other. The final match will follow this morning semifinals.

Liz Caron (Janagelo) happy with life now


A 14-year-old amateur from Massachusetts won the Connecticut Women’s Open on Wednesday, but one of the event’s most popular champions was notably absent.

Liz (Janangelo) Caron won the tournament four times but lost in a sudden-death playoff last year in a bid for title No. 5.

This year Caron was at the LPGA Shoprite Classic playing in a pro-am.

“I have friends who help run the tournament (in Galloway, N.J.). They have given me sponsor’s exemptions in the past,” Caron said. “The timing with the Connecticut Women’s Open, it didn’t work out very well.”
