Travelers gets extension

The Travelers has  received an extension of their deadline from the PGA Tour in order to get an extension to remain as title sponsor for the Travelers Championship.

Andy Bessette, the executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Travelers, confirmed it on Monday and talked more about why it happened. He hopes to come to an agreement by year's end, likely sooner than that.

Is there reason to be alarmed? Probably not. If Travelers was not interested in remaining as title sponsor to the Travelers Championship, then why extend the inevitable? Travelers loves its association with the tournament and the PGA Tour. And the tour likes what Travelers has done since taking over in 2007.

So we are not headed down that road like a decade ago, when Canon severed ties with the tournament and then Buick took over and the tournament ended up at the end of August. That is a distant memory.

Travelers will likely extend between 2-4 years beyond 2014.

But until there is an agreement between Travelers and the PGA Tour, a little bit of uncertainty will remain.

For now, Ken Duke (pictured above) will  defend his first PGA Tour win June 19-22 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.
